It’s finally spring! And you know what that means? Allergy season. This period can be a difficult time to navigate for parents of kids who struggle with allergies. Thankfully, we have Dr Cindy Htet of Parkes Street General Practice in Helensburgh to talk us through key signs and tips for the season ahead.
What are the signs that your child has seasonal allergies?
Signs for allergies in children are much the same as us adults. Look for:
- Sneezing
- nasal blockage
- clear, runny nose
- Itchy nose/ itchy throat
- Cough
- Itchy / watery eyes (in some kids)
What are the most common seasonal allergies in children?
The most common allergy is to pollen – from trees, grass, and weeds. You name it, really. This time of year tiny particles of pollen are released into the air and can cause serious discomfort.
What are the best at-home remedies for seasonal allergies for kids?
The best treatment is to avoid allergy triggers. This can be a difficult task for parents if they aren’t sure of the source. However, if your child’s allergy symptoms are severe, I would recommend staying inside until the symptoms stop.
Some at-home remedies that parents can implement include:
- Ensuring your child drinks plenty of water
- Wash your child’s hands often
- Shower your child and change their clothes after playing outside
- Inhale steam, whether that's in the bathroom or via a device
- Use over-the-counter medications like an antihistamine. Speak to your pharmacist for their recommendation.
When should you visit your GP? Or the emergency department?
You should book in with your GP if your child has persistent or worsening symptoms despite giving symptomatic treatment.
If they are presenting with any anaphylactic symptoms, call Emergency Services immediately.
In an emergency, call 000.
