People keen to shape how community contributions are recognised in Wollongong are encouraged to put their hand up for the City of Wollongong Awards Committee.

Nominations are open until 30 June for four community representative positions on the Committee, which plays an important role in the running and judging of the annual awards celebrating the people and organisations making a positive difference across the city.

Successful nominees will join a committee that includes the Lord Mayor, a fellow Wollongong City Councillor, and the current Citizen, Senior Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year. The Multicultural Communities Council of Illawarra also holds a seat, along with one representative from either the Aboriginal Reference Group or the Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council.

The four community representatives are selected to reflect a broad mix of backgrounds, interests and community involvement, helping ensure the Awards program continues to recognise the many ways people contribute to life in Wollongong.

Community representatives are appointed for two years and attend monthly meetings, where they provide advice, feedback and support to Council on the Awards program and judging criteria.

Wollongong Lord Mayor Councillor Tania Brown said the Committee gives community members a valuable opportunity to help shape how local achievements are recognised.

“Wollongong is a diverse and vibrant city, and it’s important that our awards reflect the breadth of experiences, cultures and contributions that make our community strong,” Cr Brown said.

“These awards are a chance to celebrate the people and groups who help make Wollongong a better place, and community input is essential to that process. If you’re passionate about recognising local achievement, or you want to help identify new and meaningful ways to acknowledge contribution in our city, I encourage you to nominate.

“The City of Wollongong Awards are about celebrating our community, so it’s only fitting that the community helps guide who is recognised and the ways we honour them.”
