Horizon Bank media release: 31 March 2022

April marks 20 years that Horizon Bank has been serving the Thirroul and northern suburbs community.

Banks are often described as “all the same” and in an environment where the majors are pulling out of small towns, Horizon Bank stands out as one that actually bucks that trend. Horizon Bank CEO Jon Stanfield describes their model as one that values people above all else.

“There’s a real need for people to be able to talk to their bank face-to-face when they need to without getting the run around or deal with the hassle of overseas call centres. As a customer-owned bank, the needs of our customers are our sole focus.”

“Our Thirroul branch is a great example. We opened the branch there in 2002 when one of the majors moved out. During that time the same major bank has reopened a branch, then closed it again. Our commitment to the northern suburbs for over two decades has, and continues to remain steadfast. Our customers love the close connection we have with them which makes them loyal to us” said Jon Stanfield.

“We’re committed to maintaining a branch presence in Thirroul and want our customers and the general public to know that we’re here for them and invite them to enjoy the Horizon difference” said Mr Stanfield.

Horizon was founded in Wollongong in 1964 and its branches span the NSW South Coast from Thirroul to Merimbula. This explains their close ties to coastal communities and the environment.

Horizon’s values include being a responsible and influential environmental citizen, which is demonstrated by not directly investing in, or providing loans to any company in the fossil fuel industry.

Their commitment to community support is demonstrated by being the major sponsor of the Thirroul Seaside & Arts Festival for 19 years, and acting as a food collection point for ‘Need a Feed’. They’ve also brought joy through their annual Christmas village window display at the Thirroul branch.

“Our sponsorship and in-kind activities and our ‘in it boots and all’ culture is what makes Horizon different. It demonstrates that we value people, transparency in banking, and care for our coastal communities and the environment.  We hope that resonates with people who share those values and motivates them to consider Horizon as a better choice for their banking. Other banks may be all the same, but not this one” said Mr Stanfield.
