How to Stay Healthy Through Cold & Flu Season

By Dr Meaghan Miller-McConochie at Bulli Medical Practice

As winter approaches across the Illawarra, cold and flu season intensifies alongside the cooler weather. In 2024, Australia saw over 349,000 influenza cases, with children under five and seniors most at risk. Vaccination remains the most effective prevention, yet concerning trends show only 13.7% of children aged 5–14 were vaccinated last year—and this number continues to decline.

Preventative Measures

  • Flu Vaccine: Available free for eligible groups, including young children, seniors over 65, and pregnant women. Getting your annual flu shot offers the best protection against severe symptoms and complications.

  • RSV Vaccine: Respiratory Syncytial Virus causes severe respiratory illness in young children and the elderly. Vaccination is particularly recommended for high-risk groups to prevent hospitalisation and serious complications.

  • COVID-19 Booster: Updated boosters remain important for those 65+, pregnant women, and individuals with underlying health conditions. These help significantly reduce the risk of severe illness.

  • Face Masks: Simple but effective, especially in crowded or indoor spaces. Masks help reduce transmission of respiratory viruses, including flu, RSV, and COVID-19.

  • Good Hygiene: Wash hands regularly, cover coughs and sneezes, and disinfect frequently-touched surfaces to reduce virus spread throughout your household and community.

Supporting Your Natural Immunity

  • Vitamin D, Vitamin C, and Zinc: These essential nutrients support healthy immune function and may help reduce the severity and duration of cold symptoms.

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found naturally in fish oil, these have anti-inflammatory properties that support overall immune health and recovery.

  • Probiotics: Beneficial bacteria that help boost immunity and may reduce illness duration when you do fall sick.

When to Seek Medical Help

Seek medical advice if you experience persistent fever, difficulty breathing, or symptoms that worsen rather than improve. Early treatment can prevent serious complications.
