Setting a precedent for the rest of Australia, Illawarra is championing inclusivity with a unique initiative. Wollongong first aid training provider, Accidental Health and Safety, in collaboration with PosAbilities: Strong Minds: Strong Futures, has rolled out a first-of-its-kind specialised first aid course designed exclusively for young people with autism.

The initiative is noteworthy due to its comprehensive nature. Participants who successfully complete this course will be awarded a full first aid certificate, emphasising its focus on genuine job readiness.

The course's structure deviates from traditional setups. Instead of an overwhelming test at the end, attendees are assessed with questions throughout, alleviating undue stress. The training is focused on hands on practice, uses visual aids and minimises the pressure of public volunteering.

First aid trainer Tony Van Der Weiden said: “It’s such a pleasure to be able to help neurodivergent youth embrace their strengths.”

Tony has seen the effects of helping autistic youth reach goals. “Raising a son with Autism had challenges, but seeing all that he accomplished was inspiring.”

When new non-for-profit organisation Posabilities moved into the same complex in Unanderra, they suggested the idea of a tailored course. The two entities worked together, with PosAbilities advising on neurodivergent course tailoring and Accidental Health and Safety ensuring alignment with national certification standards.

Tony said, "It's crucial to recognise the capabilities of neurodivergent individuals. This course aims to equip them with valuable skills while respecting their unique learning styles."

Through such groundbreaking efforts, Illawarra is not only providing equal opportunities but also cultivating a community where every resident is valued and included.
