Lord Mayor's column: Talking about Wollongong in the nation's capital
The Lord Mayor of Wollongong, Cr Tania Brown, congratulates organisers of this week's 'Made in the Illawarra: Innovation, Energy and Manufacturing Expo' in Canberra
This week, Wollongong City Council was proud to take part in the Made in the Illawarra: Innovation, Energy and Manufacturing Expo in Canberra with a range of industry leaders, community organisations and leading researchers from across the Illawarra.
The Expo, which was hosted by Member of Cunningham, Alison Byrnes MP, in partnership with the University of Wollongong showcased the region’s capability, technologies, products and research driving Australia’s energy transition and lower emissions manufacturing future.
I am so pleased to see our proud industrial spirit driving an incredibly exciting new chapter for our city and for Australia. Our transformation goes far beyond advanced technology and heavy industry - we are building a diverse local economy and creating the secure jobs our community needs for the future.
Wollongong is emerging as a global clean energy hub, with major projects in green hydrogen production, dual fuel power generation and gas infrastructure, driving the region’s transformation. There has also been more than $750M in recently completed supportive major energy projects that have transformed the region’s energy ecosystem.
At Wollongong City Council, we are incredibly proud to work collaboratively with the University of Wollongong, industry stakeholders and all levels of government to turn big ideas into real-world opportunities. Our long-standing Invest Wollongong partnership is living proof of what we can achieve when we share a bold vision for sustainable economic and social growth.
Council continues to support Wollongong’s transition towards net zero and a clean energy economy.
Congratulations to all who were involved in putting the event in Canberra together, and we look forward to continuing the ongoing collaboration with government, industry, research partners and the community to ensure alignment with national policy direction, to maximise local benefit, and position Wollongong as a leader in Australia’s clean energy future.
Onward and upward.
