Community activists are celebrating a victory on the pedestrian crossing front.
Safe Streets to School media release: 3 August 2021
Over the last years, individual parents in Wollongong have repeatedly asked for a pedestrian crossing to be installed on their child’s journey to school. Council staff said no because it didn’t comply with the NSW warrant for pedestrian crossings, Safe Streets to School campaigner Lena Huda said today.
“Warrants are State guidelines to install new pedestrian crossings and until now council has only considered zebra crossings that satisfy the NSW warrant. Even in locations where a crossing would have provided a much-needed walking connection, proposed crossings have been repeatedly rejected because they failed to meet the specifications in the warrant,” Ms Huda said.
“Yesterday at council, all councillors voted in favour of Mithra Cox’s motion that confirms on Wollongong’s local streets we don’t have to satisfy NSW warrants to get a new crossing approved.
“Instead in Wollongong, we will be looking at the new NSW Movement and Place framework that aims to create successful streets and roads by balancing the movement of people and goods with the amenity and quality of places.
“This is welcomed by our group Safe Streets to School. We are campaigning for footpaths and crossings or 30km/h limits within the walking catchment of schools. With yesterday’s motion we are one step closer to our vision of where all kids and families can enjoy getting to school safely,” Ms Huda said.
