A new weekly farmers and makers market launching in Shellharbour on Tuesday, August 5, is set to breathe life into a quiet section of the Lake Illawarra foreshore.
The Local Table will run from 2pm to 5pm every Tuesday at Reddall Reserve and bring together food producers, cooks, artists and makers.
It’s the brainchild of local business owner Nicole O’Brien and her husband Brendon, who responded to a community call-out for more activity near Windang Bridge.
Nicole says she began talks with Shellharbour City Council after Embers in the Village restaurant owner Abhishek Jain raised the need for more activity and nightlife in the area.
She felt Reddall Reserve was the perfect spot and has drawn on her passion and experience running markets to help bring the vision of a lively community hub to life.
Set against the lake’s scenic backdrop, the market offers stallholders a chance to grow their business in a new environment.
It aims to energise the start of the week with a rotating line-up of food stalls, handmade goods and local entertainment.
Nicole says she’s excited by the calibre of artisan producers already on board, including Del Bello Biscotti, known for Italian treats inspired by owner Jordan’s late Nonna. Expect crispy crostoli and amoretti flavoured with hazelnut, limoncello and more.
Local favourite Embers in the Village is expected to join the roster soon, offering hot meals and takeaway options.
And for those keen to get on the water, stand-up paddleboard operator Rebecca Dunning will offer 30-minute hires for $20 during market hours.
In a bid to be plastic-free, the market will have a reusable bag library, on-site FOGO bin for food scraps, and a can and bottle drop-off run by Nicole and Brendon’s young son, with proceeds supporting local projects.
The couple hopes the market helps build connection and give their three boys a deeper understanding of seasonal eating and sustainability.
“We find ourselves happiest when surrounded by family and good food – and local food just tastes better,” Nicole says.
