Prue's View on the Voice

In late 2023, Australians will vote in a referendum to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Peoples of Australia through an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice enshrined in the Constitution.

Prue Watson, of Clifton School of Arts, shares why she has decided to support the Voice.

Firstly, it is the decent thing to do. Simply, Indigenous people have asked us to come to the table – the natural thing to do is to accept their request.

A project came from the conversation I had with a friend who was wearing a YES badge outside Thirroul IGA. I commented on the badge and the conversation started. How could we have this referendum contribute to all of us and bring a Yes vote? As it grew in my mind, I saw it as the most important thing, as Australians, we would be doing. Our ancient Indigenous culture has so much to offer – how could we not embrace it and learn from it.

So the question was: how can I support a Yes vote and contribute to my community? An art exhibition at the Clifton School of Arts (CSA)? With Vyvian Wilson’s willing assistance, I’ve taken this on.

The next step was to seek CSA’s support because I feel having organisations or bodies support the Voice beyond individuals is important.

Happily, CSA is fully backing the project and the exhibition will take place on the weekend of 12-13 August.
