Regional Development Australia (RDA) Illawarra Illawarra release: 9 October 2023

Illawarra businesses are being tasked with securing their optimal future workforce by helping identify the skills that are most in demand in the region.

On Monday, 9 October 2023, RDA Illawarra will launch the second six monthly skills demand survey in its two-year study of skills requirements in the Illawarra.

Delivered by research partner EMRS, the survey aims to compile region-specific data to identify industry training, recruitment and migration strategies for the Illawarra that addresses the current and future needs of employers and regional investors.

The Illawarra is experiencing historically low unemployment and has an unprecedented pipeline of transformational infrastruture projects that will require skilled workers for design, construction, operation and maintainance – and to deliver more goods and services for our growing population.

RDA Illawarra Policy Director Alex Spillett said the 185 organisations took part in the first round of surveys in May with 56 percent rating skills shortages in the region as either high or extreme.

“The data from the first survey provided valuable insight into how shortages are impacting business growth and planning as well as perceptions of what the Illawara best offers employees and what areas are of concern to them,” he said.

“We now need to build on this data and the more businesses that get involved, the better the results and the bigger our chance of developing and attracting the skills we really need in the Illawarra.”

All Illawarra businesses are invited to take part in the survey which takes only five minutes to complete and can be done over the phone or online. Employers will be asked about the skills and occupations that are specifically required for their business now, and into the future.

Results of the survey will be available on the RDA website and will be used to inform businesses, training organisations, community and government about the skills needed now and in the future.
