The bush is waking up

Take a hike. No, really, take a hike. At the time of writing it’s Saturday evening and I’m exhausted. Bone weary. My face is hot from too much sun. I have scrapes and scratches up my arm and my husband had to remove a tick from my side. And I feel amazing!
It seems that the landscape, and all in it, has finally woken up after the eternal wet, cold months we’ve just lived through. For those of us who love nothing more than to while away a few hours watching wildlife, winter is tough. But today, the bush was literally humming. The leaf litter was starting to bustle with jumping spiders and wasps and teeny, tiny grasshoppers. I accidentally scared a couple of mountain dragons who were spread out, drinking in the sun. Bees, including a couple of native species, hung heavily around the native flowers bursting into bloom along the dirt track. The yellow-tailed black cockatoos were feasting on, and throwing away, banksia flowers.

We even met a human and chatted about all things nature for about an hour. Now, I’m not a people-y kind of gal at the best of times, but we swapped tips on where to find different species and he was able to put a name to the spotted sun orchids we had found earlier and we all ended up on our hands and knees chasing spiders. So I guess, we’re friends now!

Trust me, take some time out, and head bush, while everything is still waking up.
