On Saturday, May 6, Brianna Dalgleish, a Gerringong local, physiotherapist and mother of two, launched The Mother Movement, an online platform designed to help women navigate the postnatal period known as the Fourth Trimester. Her app offers evidence-based guidance and support to help mothers overcome the challenges they face during this critical period.

It's definitely a service that I would have signed up to after the birth of my kids.

The Mother Movement brings together a team of experts, including a dietician and a psychologist, all of whom are mothers themselves. The paid subscription service offers a range of resources, including videos and an online community, to aid women in their postnatal recovery journey.

Brianna's own experience with postnatal anxiety and depression led her to seek help from a psychologist, and she realised how vital it was to understand the changes that were happening to her during the postpartum period. As an experienced physiotherapist, she also noticed that many women would only seek postnatal care after their children had grown up, regretting that they had not taken the time to look after themselves during their postnatal recovery. Hands up if that sounds familiar!

Brianna believes that every mother deserves access to the best care possible during the postpartum period. The Mother Movement focuses on three key areas – body, mind and nutrition – to provide a holistic approach to postnatal care. Brianna covers the physical aspect as a physiotherapist; psychologist Aley Hooper focuses on the emotional aspects of postnatal recovery; and dietitian Ali Grattan-Smith addresses specific postpartum nutritional needs.

The best part is that The Mother Movement offers advice in short and relevant videos that mums can easily digest and watch on their phone while feeding. We all know the love affair we have with our phone as a new mum – the only connection to the outside world. And the Mother Movement tips come without the burden of time and money that an in-person consultation might involve.

The service is designed for women who are either pregnant or in their first year of motherhood. The team recommends that pregnant women sign up for a membership to gain early access to their videos on postnatal recovery, giving them plenty of time to prepare for the journey ahead.

Brianna emphasises the importance of pre and postnatal care, with one in five mothers experiencing postnatal depression and one in two women experiencing incontinence. These issues can have a long-lasting impact on a woman's physical and mental wellbeing. Sadly, there is often a huge emphasis placed on caring for the baby during the postpartum period, with little regard for the mother's needs.
