Wollongong City Council has had a sell-out success in Helensburgh, with its first presentation on plans for the town's new Community Centre and Library fully booked.

Disappointed residents may either register to be on the wait list for 25 February's event Tradies Helensburgh or attend presentations in March, including a March 4 online preview by Sherson Architecture and council's project team.

The new "flexible" library and community centre will be over two blocks at 53-55 Walker Street, next to the existing library. It is tipped to include spaces for fitness classes, performances, social functions and more.

Neighbourhood Forum 1, and new spin-off group 2508 Collaborate, have criticised council's engagement over the old and new locations, and are currently running their own survey on what locals want from a community centre.

2508 Collaborate says its survey had more than 450 responses and the group continues to campaign to save the old hall.

The old centre is at 26 Walker St, opposite the site for the new one, and it is likely to be demolished eventually. The main hall has been closed since late 2021 due to flooding problems and "widespread black mould", according to council.

In an update on the new centre last year, Lord Mayor of Wollongong, Cr Tania Brown, said: “A cornerstone project for Helensburgh, the vision is for a vibrant hub that blends technology, creativity, and green innovation that complements the area’s unique bushland character.

“We appreciate that this has been a long time coming for residents of Helensburgh. With input from over 750 people, including young people living in the area, we’re confident this facility will reflect local values and future aspirations.”
