Wollongong Harbour jetty shut amid safety concerns

Wollongong Harbour’s ageing infrastructure has taken another hit with the sudden closure of the central timber jetty on safety grounds.
In recent years, concerns have been raised over the condition of the breakwater, which boat owners described as “disintegrating” and “dangerous”.
That coincided with safety concerns at the harbour’s breakwall, a popular fishing spot where two lives have been lost in recent years when fishermen were washed into the water in huge seas.
Those tragic incidents did prompt some action with the replacement of a broken safety fence and additional warning signs installed at the entry point to the breakwall.
Transport for NSW (Maritime) is now focusing its attention on the harbour’s public jetty, which is showing signs of age.

A spokesperson said the jetty had been temporarily closed following a routine inspection that identified structural concerns, including a damaged pylon and areas of missing decking.
Access to the jetty, another popular fishing spot, has been blocked off with cyclone fencing across the jetty’s entry point.
“The safety of visitors and the community remains our highest priority,” the Transport for NSW spokesperson said.
“The site has been securely fenced, and clear signage will be installed to inform visitors of the closure.
“We are engaging a qualified engineering team to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the jetty. The timeline for repairs will be determined based on the results of the assessment. Rest assured, we are committed to addressing these matters promptly and responsibly.
“We thank the public for their understanding and patience while we ensure the Wollongong Harbour jetty meets the highest safety standards.”

A timeline for repairs is still to be determined.
