Spring is here and so is an exciting new line-up of events at the South Coast Writers Centre
On Friday 11th September at Coledale Hall, join Wollongong’s own Lucy Heffernan as she performs her one-woman rock n’ roll monologue, PARTY GIRL, that has graced the stages of the Adelaide and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals and now returns to the Illawarra for one night only. Critically acclaimed as “Australia’s own version of Fleabag” (Theatre Thoughts), PARTY GIRL is an intimate, funny, brutal and deeply moving work that speaks (and sings) directly to its audience. Recommended for ages 16+. SCWC will be running a fundraising bar at this event.
Shoalhaven Regional Gallery in Nowra will be staying open late on Thursday 24th September for a night of music, poetry and art. There will be a cocktail bar, food truck, poetry by Nathan Mudyi Sentance and live music by Cooee (Kirli Saunders and Mark Chester Harding) and Nicole Smede. This event is a partnership between Shoalhaven Regional Gallery and SCWC.
In November, the Vintage, Book & Art Bazaar returns! The Bazaar is a twice-yearly event in Coledale Hall that brings together a curated line-up of stallholders sharing a wide range of art, handmade goods, locally published books, and rare vintage and unique retro products. It is a celebration of the local artistic community in the Illawarra, and helps fundraise for the SCWC’s writing programs. Stallholder applications are now open for local artists and makers.
The SCWC Film Club, held on the first Saturday of every month (except January) at 7:30pm in Coledale Hall, hosted by local film expert Graham Thorburn. Graham begins each Film Club evening with some information about the chosen movie—the context it was made in, the people who made it, perhaps even a bit of industry gossip—and attendees can stick around after the screening to discuss the film. Tea and coffee is provided. September’s film was the 2013 comedy Philomena, starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, and will be followed by the 2011 Iranian drama A Separation in October.
