One of Wollongong’s busiest roads is about to slow down. Transport for NSW will introduce a new speed limit of 50 km/hr on a two-kilometre stretch of Corrimal Street, including through the CBD.
Starting next weekend, work will begin to install new speed limit signs. The speed limit will change from 60 km/hr to 50 km/hr from around 60 metres south of Bank Street to the intersection with George Hanley Drive near Stuart Park.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said the change, which is supported by Wollongong City Council and NSW Police, follows a speed zone review of Corrimal Street.
“Speed management plays a vital role in shaping behaviour on our roads and streets,” the spokesperson said. “The speed zone review found a 50km/hr speed limit would greatly improve safety on the street, which has a high number of roadside access points and activity, including retail, restaurants and residential apartments.

“In 2025, Wollongong City Council released their City Centre Movement and Place Plan, which recognised Corrimal Street as one of the most active places in Wollongong. This speed zone change will support this high level of activity. It will also support movement of all modes of travel inside and the Wollongong city centre now and into the future.”
A speed zone review is a comprehensive process that includes site inspections, analysis of crash data and traffic volumes, and future development of the area.

The review on Corrimal Street also considered community concerns and investigations into a fatal crash at the intersection of Corrimal Street and Crown Street in 2022.
Transport for NSW said the change in speed limit is expected to have minimal impact on travel times across the full length, noting that during busy periods traffic travels much slower than the existing 60 km/hr limit.
Work to install the new speed limit signs will be carried out from Sunday, 15 February for five nights between 8pm to 4am, weather permitting.

Traffic control, single lane closures and a reduced speed limit will be in place during the installation work for the safety of road users and workers.
Electronic signs are now in place to alert motorists to the upcoming change.
The community can sign up at the Safer Roads NSW website to receive updates about changes to permanent speed limits in their area.
