Turn waste into opportunity at Green Connect Festival
Create a starter garden kit, take a pickling workshop or watch a compost demo at Green Connect Farm's "A Waste of a Saturday" celebration, writes Kate Callaghan
The community is invited to discover practical ways to reduce waste and live more sustainably at "A Waste of a Saturday – A Celebration of All Things Waste," taking place on Saturday, 22 August, from 9am to 2pm at Green Connect Farm, Warrawong.
The festival promises a fun and informative day for all, featuring a variety of hands-on workshops, including easy pickling, growing microgreens and worm farming, and plenty more to discover throughout the day.
Visitors can also enjoy composting demonstrations, create a starter garden kit to take home, and hear from local businesses and community leaders sharing innovative ideas for reducing waste and building a more resilient food future.
Discussion panels will feature representatives from organisations including Healthy Cities, Food for life, Green Yakka, Crooked River Winery, Pope's Produce, Woonona Community Garden, Flagstaff, The Hair Lounge, Balinese Spice Magic and Flame Tree Food Co-op, highlighting inspiring local initiatives and practical solutions for a more sustainable future.
Hosted by Green Connect, the event showcases the organisation's commitment to sustainability, community and social impact. Green Connect is a local social enterprise that operates an award-winning urban farm and delivers environmental education programs across the Illawarra.
The farm grows fresh, seasonal produce for its veggie box subscriptions, with every box purchased helping to support meaningful employment opportunities for former refugees and young people.
The day will also feature a pop-up op shop, with every item priced at just $5, along with food from Balinese Spice Magic, a bake sale, and coffee and tea.
Tickets are available through Humanitix.
