Wollongong City Council update: 4 April 2023
Wollongong City Council has created a temporary pedestrian and cyclist accessway across the Hacking River while the Otford Causeway remains off-limits to cars and other vehicles.
The causeway was destroyed during February’s rain event and needs to be replaced. We’re working on a design to replace the culvert and have met with key stakeholders like the NSW Rural Fire Service and NSW Fisheries. We’re also working to source materials needed for the work as there continues to be supply chain challenges for building materials and products.
Clean-up work has been completed within the road reserve and the temporary pedestrian crossing point has been built using a mix of concrete and asphalt. Those using the area are asked to follow directions on the signage, and the line marking.
“After the causeway was damaged in February we were concerned that people may try to make their way from one side to the other using the broken slabs,’’ Wollongong City Council Director Infrastructure and Works Joanne Page said.
“It will take some time for us to rebuild this causeway – it’s a complex job – and so we hope that this temporary link will make it easier and safer for people to walk across this location.”
