Wollongong City Council media release: Friday 16 December 2022

Wollongong is known for some of the best and cleanest beaches on the South Coast! So, it’s no wonder that locals and visitors alike flock to our sandy shores as soon as summer arrives.

With Wollongong receiving an A+ from the NSW Government for our beaches this year, we’re expecting the number of people at our beaches and pools to increase during the holiday period.

This summer, we’re encouraging everyone to explore some of our lesser-known beaches and rock pools. There are so many options to choose from when it comes to going for a swim. In our city we’ve got 17 patrolled beaches, 9 unpatrolled rock pools, 6 patrolled freshwater pools and 3 patrolled saltwater pools. That’s 35 different places to go for a swim!

“We’re challenging locals and visitors to broaden their horizons and explore somewhere new this summer! It’s easy to get stuck in a routine when it comes to visiting the beach, and that’s a real shame as we have so many fantastic beaches and rock pools to choose from,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“We love our most-popular beaches for a reason, but there are so many lesser-known gems such as Scarborough, Fairy Meadow and Windang beaches, or if you prefer a dip in the pool, check out Towradgi, Woonona or Bellambi rock pools.”

Wherever you decide to go, we encourage everyone to plan ahead and make the most of public transport and our cycling networks.

“It’s going to be a busy summer, especially for people travelling south to the ‘Gong from Southern Sydney. We suggest adding extra travel time to your journey and making the most of public transport. If you choose to drive, we suggest parking a little further away from your destination to avoid traffic congestion,” Cr Bradbery said.

“For those travelling around the Wollongong CBD, don’t forget to check out the Free Gong Shuttle Bus. The free bus is one of the easiest ways to travel around the CBD to shop, dine or swim. It runs every 10 to 20 minutes and stops at the railways station, the hospital, the centre of Wollongong and beaches.”
