Fernwood Woonona celebrates 20 years of supporting women in the Illawarra

In June, Fernwood Woonona celebrated 20 years of empowering women across the Illawarra, marking two decades as a trusted and much-loved part of the local community.
Since opening its doors in 2006, Fernwood Woonona has welcomed 10,817 women through the club, supporting members through every stage of life, fitness and wellbeing. From teenagers building confidence, to busy mums making time for themselves, to women in their 80s staying active and connected, the club has become far more than a gym. It is a place where women feel safe, supported and encouraged.
Club owners Kim and Clint Rimmer said reaching the 20-year milestone is something the team is incredibly proud of.
“Fernwood Fitness is a brand that has stood the test of time through challenges like the GFC and COVID, while continuing to support women in our local community,” Kim said.
“Having team members and members who have been with us for 20 years is a testament to the loyalty, connection and friendships built here.”
Kim and Clint Rimmer took ownership of Fernwood Woonona 10 years ago, bringing with them a fresh vision for the club. When Kim first walked through the doors 11 years ago, she saw a space with enormous potential, but one that needed significant upgrades and a renewed sense of direction.
“My goal was to create a place where women could access everything they needed under one roof at an affordable price, without juggling multiple memberships,” Kim said.
Over the past two decades, women’s attitudes toward fitness have also changed significantly. Kim said women now view fitness as an investment in their long-term health, rather than simply a way to lose weight or stay fit. Strength training has become a priority, recovery is now recognised as an essential part of wellbeing, and Reformer Pilates has grown to become the club’s largest program, with more than 550 women participating each week.

At the heart of Fernwood Woonona is its community.
“It’s our tribe of amazing women,” Kim said. “Women come here for fitness, but they stay because of the community and connections they build.”
One of the club’s longest-standing members, Jean, is 85 and still attends yoga twice a week, a reflection of what Fernwood Woonona has always stood for: women feeling strong, supported and connected at every age.
After 20 years in the Illawarra, Fernwood Woonona continues to be a space where women can prioritise themselves, build confidence and be part of a community that celebrates every stage of life.
