Fire safety for 1st Austi Joeys

To kick off the winter months, 1st Austinmer Joey Scouts were thrilled to welcome firefighters from Thirroul Fire Station 461 for a special visit focused on fire safety education. With a campfire night coming up soon, the Joeys were eager to learn how to stay safe and be prepared.

The firefighters taught the Joeys important firesafe practices, including how to Stop, Drop, Cover and Roll, what to do if there is a fire at home, and how to identify a safe meeting point. The highlight of the afternoon was exploring the fire truck – complete with very loud sirens – and watching how quickly the crew can gear up for an emergency.

The Joeys shared some of their favourite moments:

• “I learnt that you go to your letterbox as your meeting point if there is a fire at your house.” — Lachlan, 6

• “I liked timing and seeing how fast Darren was at getting dressed in all his firefighting gear.” — Amelia, 8

• “It was such an amazing afternoon learning about fire safety.” — Joshua, 7

• “The firefighters told us how they get everyone out of the house and how to call triple zero in an emergency.” — Emily, 8

A big thank you to Belinda, Elliott and Darren for giving their time and sharing such valuable firesafety knowledge with the Joeys. The Joeys left feeling confident, informed, and excited to put their new skills into practice.

1st Austinmer Joey Scouts (5-8 years) meet every Tuesday during school term from 5pm–6pm at Austinmer Scout Hall, Moore Street.
