Help us find our next social justice champion

Social justice is a phrase which is often mooted at the highest levels, but its impact is felt most deeply in our local communities. It is reflected in the people who stand beside those experiencing disadvantage, who speak up for those whose voices are overlooked, and who work tirelessly to ensure everyone is treated with dignity, fairness and respect. 

Every day, across our region, there are individuals making a real difference. They advocate for the vulnerable, challenge inequality, create opportunities for inclusion, and strengthen the social fabric that binds our communities together. Much of this work happens quietly, without recognition or reward. Yet these efforts have a profound impact on the lives of others. 

Last year's Social Justice Champion Award recipient, Val Fell OAM, is a powerful example of what social justice in action looks like. At 97 years of age, Val continues to be an extraordinary advocate for older Australians, particularly people living with dementia and the carers who support them. Through her leadership of the Dementia Carers Support Group in Corrimal, her annual regional dementia forum, and her ongoing advocacy through organisations such as COTA and OPAN, she has dedicated decades to ensuring older people are seen, heard and respected.

Val's achievements are remarkable, but what truly sets her apart is her unwavering commitment to human rights, dignity and inclusion. Her work demonstrates how one person can create meaningful change and improve the lives of countless others. 

The 2026 Social Justice Champion Award provides an opportunity to celebrate the people in our communities who are making a similar impact today. We all know someone whose compassion, courage and determination are helping to build a fairer and more inclusive society.
