The South Coast Writers Centre is pleased to announce the opening of this year’s SCWC & River of Art Ekphrastic Poetry & Flash Fiction Prize!
River of Art is a vibrant annual arts festival located in Eurobodalla on the NSW Far South Coast, from 26 September – 6 October 2025. It showcases creative exhibitions, performances and events from Durras to Bermagui and Cobargo.
Ekphrastic writing responds to or is inspired by art. This writing prize invites submissions of poetry or short fiction under 500 words that responds to art, particularly the art showcased in the River of Art Festival & Art Trail.
The winner will receive $250, and all shortlisted entries will be published in the 2026 SCWC Anthology of Writing. To find out more and to submit, visit: southcoastwriters.org/riverofart
There’s a full calendar of workshops and writing courses coming up over the next few months. Tools for Writing Fiction with Dr. Rosemary Montgomery returns, Saturday afternoons at Wollongong Library from 16 August. Specifically designed for writers over 25, this course focuses on developing writing ideas, techniques and practice, along with a strong strand of supportive editing of your work.
Learn the secrets to audio storytelling in a podcast workshop with producer Jennifer Macey, Saturday 6 September, and how to write romance from bestselling novelist Alyssa J. Montgomery, Saturday 18 October, both in Coledale. Limited tickets for both workshops, so get in quick!
Plus, the SCWC is pleased to announce our inaugural Writers’ Book Club, a series of evenings where authors are invited to lead a discussion about one of their favourite books. On Friday 19 September, join local bestselling author Hayley Scrivenor at Red Point Arts in Port Kembla, to discuss Donna Tartt’s dark academia classic The Secret History.
