Keira Lions dominate Illawarra cricket awards night
In a dominant display, winning the first, second and third grade premierships, the Keira Lions were the big winners at the annual Illawarra Cricket presentation night.
Northern Districts was the other big winners, taking out the club championship at the event, held at the Fraternity Club on Friday night.
A highlight of proceedings was induction of three past legends of Illawarra cricket into the Cricket Illawarra Hall of Fame – all-rounders Harold Stapleton, Ron Ring and Bill Moffatt. The Illawarra Flame will present a feature on the trio next week.


The first grade batting aggregate award was taken out by Sam Hobson from Northern Districts who finished the season with 522 runs. Jonathon Fowler from Northern Districts took the averages with 509 runs at 72.11. Justin Brancato from Northern Districts took out the wicketkeeper award with 17 catches and six stumpings.
Women’s cricketer of the year was Amanda Rose from Northern Districts, and the women’s spirit of cricket award was shared by Jasmine Roberts from Keira and Wendy Holtby from Balgownie.

The Service to Illawarra Cricket Award was awarded to the late Peter Ferguson. The award was accepted by his wife, Barbara Ferguson, and friend Rob Kirkwood from Illawarra president Andrew Maher. Right: Jack Yates, Port Kembla’s captain wins the Ron Ring Illawarra cricketer of the year award, presented by Judith Ring and Ian Hogg. Jack scored 390 runs at 35.45 and took 26 wickets at 15.88.
