Wollongong City Council media release: 15 May 2023

We all want to feel like our lives have purpose and volunteering is one way that millions of everyday Australians find meaning by giving back to their community.

On Wednesday 17 May, the Wollongong Volunteering Expo is returning to the Wollongong Town Hall. From 9.30am-2pm, you’re invited to drop-in and learn more about volunteering opportunities with 22 organisations that work to improve the lives of people in the Illawarra region.

Whether you’re keen to get your hands dirty caring for the city’s natural areas, help people learn a new skill, support people to live independently, or just want to do something good in your community, there’s a volunteering opportunity for everybody.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said that the event is being held during National Volunteer Week.

“This year’s theme for National Volunteer Week is ‘The Change Makers’ which recognises the transformative nature of volunteering. I think this is a fitting as it recognises the progressive nature of volunteering. Volunteers are essential to so many programs and services that improve the daily lives of people in the community,” Cr Bradbery said.

“Volunteering is part of the social fabric of Wollongong community. It’s not only a great way to bring people together, but it also builds communities and makes our city a better place to live.

“One of the hurdles towards volunteering is knowing where to start. That’s why Wollongong City Council hosts the Wollongong Volunteering Expo each year. It’s a bit like a match-making event, where people can find out more about volunteering opportunities that suit their interests and availability and connect with organisations who need volunteers.”

Entry to the Wollongong Volunteering Expo is free and there’s no need to book. Simply drop-in to the Wollongong Town Hall on Wednesday 17 May from 9.30am-2pm.
