May's NIRAG/NF 3 Update
By Ross Dearden, secretary of Northern Illawarra Residents Action Group (NIRAG)
The Northern Illawarra Residents Action Group (NIRAG) supports the preservation of open space and the retention and enhancement of our Natural Environment, European and Indigenous Heritage. Residents of Neighbourhood Forum 3 area (Woonona, Bulli, Thirroul and Austinmer) are welcome to attend NIRAG meetings to contribute to local community issues and concerns.
- Homes NSW proposal at 6-10 Southview St, Bulli to replace 3 existing homes has been revised but still exceeds the R2 zone limit that has a height limit of 2 storeys. Advice has been received that despite public submissions Homes NSW does not plan to make any further changes to the design. The target date to start construction is December 2026.
- Amy Street, Thirroul: The majority of Lot 303 (about 7ha) of the lot, west of the shared cycleway between Woodlands Creek and Hewitts Creek, Thirroul is zoned C2, Environmental Conservation. Ongoing management of the C2, Environmental Conservation part of the land is essential as this is a vital Green Corridor (similar to the Keira and Kembla Green Corridors). Council has agreed to review the strategic value of having this land as public reserve. Advice is awaited from Council.
- NIRAG was represented at the Wollongong Road Safety Action Plan community forum on 1 April to identify road safety challenges and opportunities. Alternative routes to LHD are required for bushfires and other emergencies. It was suggested that connections could be built as shared way /cycleways to improve network resilience.
- At the May meeting Council officers will attend to discuss the Draft Delivery Program and Operational Plan 2026 – 2027. This is an opportunity to influence the scope and timing of upcoming projects. Members are encouraged to bring your ideas and contribute at the meeting.
The next NIRAG quarterly meeting will be on Wednesday, 13 May 2026 at 7pm upstairs in the Bulli Community Centre.
All are welcome to share and contribute.
