Following Wollongong City Council's revelation last week that Gilmore Park had a new accessible toilet covered in floral art, residents may have wondered, 'Whatever next?'
The answer is the Bellambi Boat Ramp Amenities.
Council is also planning to give this building the artistic treatment – and not just so that locals can enjoy a lovely-looking loo.
"Wrapping a structure in an artwork, such as what was recently done at Gilmore Park, West Wollongong has the added benefit of being a general vandalism and graffiti deterrent," a Council spokesperson said.
Council likes to commission permanent and temporary art in public spaces.
"When it’s feasible, we like to make amenities such as buildings or even toilet blocks more aesthetically pleasing by commissioning an artwork," the spokesperson said.
"Council decides whether to add an artwork to a public amenity such as a building or toilet on a case-by-case basis with the decision being made during the early design phase.
"This is highly dependent on the location, budget, and community interest."
Native plants inspired the Gilmore Park Exeloo artwork by Sydney's Rhiannon Hopley.
