We’re calling for nominations for the Local Government Regional NAIDOC Awards 2022!
The Local Government Regional NAIDOC Awards is an important event that brings together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama and Shoalhaven local government areas. It’s a celebration and acknowledgment of the achievements and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people that is held annually during NAIDOC Week.
The first Regional NAIDOC Awards event started in 2011, and since then it has been hosted by each of the four councils. This year, Wollongong City Council will have the honour of hosting the prestigious awards at the Fraternity Club, Fairy Meadow on Saturday 30 July.
Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said that the Awards would be a welcome event for community members, especially as it had been paused for the past two years due to COVID-19.
“This year’s theme for NAIDOC Week is ‘Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!’, a message which tells us that we all need to take meaningful action to champion institutional, structural, collaborative and cooperative change,” Cr Bradbery said.
“At the same time, we must also acknowledge and celebrate those who have long been leaders for change in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
“The Local Government Regional NAIDOC Awards is an exceptionally well-attended, annual event that expects to bring together up to 450 community members, sponsors, dignitaries, Elders and award recipients. This event really is a celebration of culture and community and will be a great night out for all who attend.”
Nominations now open!
Nominations are now open to recognise Aboriginal* and Non-Aboriginal achievement across the following categories:
- Aboriginal Elder of the Year (male and female)
- Aboriginal Community Representative of the Year
- Aboriginal Young Achiever of the Year (male and female)
- Aboriginal Community Volunteer of the Year
- Aboriginal Organisation of the Year
- Outstanding Contribution to Reconciliation (Aboriginal or Non-Aboriginal).
