Wollongong City Council release: 11 July 2023

Wollongong City Libraries and Wollongong Art Gallery are calling for primary school students in years K-6 to create an original artwork inspired by this year’s Children’s Book Week® theme: Read, Grow, Inspire.

There are 13 prizes on offer and first-place winners in each category will receive an exciting Children’s Book Week® prize pack valued up to $100.

The competition will be judged by staff members from Wollongong Art Gallery and Wollongong City Libraries

Sounds like the sort of school holiday fun you’ve been looking for? To participate, pick up a free entry template by visiting your local library and get creative. Once your artwork is ready, drop it back in to your local library before Friday 4 August 2023 for a chance to win.

Manager Library and Community Services Jenny Thompson encouraged students to take some time during the school holidays to get creative and to submit an original artwork.

“Children’s Book Week is one of our favourite annual events. It’s a chance to really highlight the incredible stories which are in the Wollongong City Libraries’ collection,” Ms Thompson said.

“We want to help encourage young people in our community to fall in love with reading. This competition is a great way to celebrate everything that’s great about books. I can’t wait to see the artworks!”

Wollongong City Council Gallery Program Director John Monteleone said that he was hoping to see creative entries that spoke to this year’s Book Week theme.

“This year the Children’s Book Week theme® is Read, Grow, Inspire. I think the theme offers a lot of options for students to use their imagination to design an interesting artwork,” Mr Monteleone said.

“Wollongong Art Gallery is pleased to be able to partner with Wollongong City Libraries on this program. We’re bringing our art expertise to the judging table.  We’ll be looking out for truly creative and original works to award first prize.”

The Children’s Book Week® Art Competition is open for submissions until Friday 4 August 2023.
