SOLD! Gerringong’s original police station fetches more than $3.3 million
Gerringong's original police station, dating from the 1880s, has just sold for the first time in more than 90 years
Perched on a hill just north of Gerringong township, the town’s original police station, dating from the 1880s, has just sold for the first time in more than 90 years.
The four-bedroom, one-bathroom Fern Street property isn’t your average country home. The new owners now have access to two original jail cells with iron doors in the former exercise yard.
The property served as Gerringong’s police station at a time when the village was little more than a tiny dairying hamlet, from 1882 to 1933.
In the years that followed, the building has been transformed into a family home and lovingly restored while preserving much of the locally sourced sandstone, bluestone and Australian red cedar, showcasing the craftsmanship of Australia’s past.

Currently used as a sitting and dining room, the enclosed front verandah stretches across the house, offering spectacular views over Werri Beach, the headland and surrounding mountains.
Selling agent Angie Ritchie, from First National Coast and Country, said: “From the hallway, three spacious bedrooms await, each with beautiful glass windows, fireplaces, original hardwood flooring, patterned ceilings and wooden sash windows. These rooms retain the home’s historical charm while providing modern comfort.”

Angie said the former jail cells offer a unique historical feature and can be used either as an office or extra bedroom. “This was a rare opportunity to own a piece of Australian history,” she said.
The final sale price for Gerringong’s original police station was $3.325 million.
