Volunteer surf lifesavers at North Wollongong Beach have been dealing with a whole new hazard for swimmers over the Easter long weekend.

Last weekend a large section of the fence was smashed into the ocean.

In late March, during the huge seas created by the East Coast Low, a large section of the safety fence protecting the sea wall construction zone was washed away.

Workers remove what was left of the fence from North Beach.

While most of the missing fence was recovered, over the weekend members of North Wollongong Surf Club were undertaking several very different rescues, dragging large sections to shore to prevent a danger to ocean swimmers.

Work on the sea wall is expected to begin shortly, aimed at protecting the coastline from rising sea levels.
