Daffodil Day marks 40 years of fundraising for cancer research
This Thursday, look out for bright yellow blooms on sale in Illawarra shopping malls as part of the Cancer Council's annual fundraiser
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Cancer Council Australia's fundraising Daffodil Day.
From 8.30am to 6.30pm on Thursday (August 20), staff and volunteers will be out in the community – including at Stockland Shellharbour and Figtree Grove – selling daffodils to raise money for cancer research, advocacy, prevention and support.
The Cancer Council is the largest non-government funder of cancer research in Australia and when Daffodil Day started in 1986 “the five-years cancer survival was approximately 46%,” according to a Cancer Council statement.
“Today, thanks to the support of the community raising funds for cancer research – survival is now 72%.”
The Cancer Council’s research and education works to help prevent cancer and assist those with a diagnosis to live well during and after treatment.
