Divers to assess extent of damage to ageing harbour jetty

It’s been closed to the public for four months and there’s no sign of Wollongong Harbour’s ageing timber jetty reopening any time soon.

In mid March, following a routine inspection, Transport for NSW fenced off the jetty on the eastern side of the harbour after identifying structural concerns. These included a damaged pylon and areas of missing and “deteriorating” decking.

For decades, the jetty has been a popular fishing spot for amateur anglers.

“The safety of visitors and the community remains our highest priority,” a Transport for NSW spokesperson said.

“The initial inspection recommended that a detailed underwater assessment be undertaken before the condition of the structure can be fully understood, and any decisions regarding future use or reopening can be made.”

Transport for NSW said it expected to use divers to carry out the inspection below the surface of the jetty “to determine the condition of the submerged structural elements”.

“The findings of this assessment will help determine the extent of any required repair works, and inform future options for the structure. Public safety remains our highest priority, and the jetty will remain closed while these investigations are completed.

“Transport for NSW understands the importance of this jetty to the Wollongong community and will provide further updates once the underwater inspection has been completed and the assessment findings have been reviewed.”
