Magic found in toy workshop
By Jan Johnston of Stanwell Park Country Women's Association (CWA)
Our visit to the Toy Restoration Centre at Jannali was great fun. We were privileged to have a tour of the workshop where all the magic happens to transform donated toys into sparkling new toys ready for display and sale in the shop. The workshop is operated by volunteers and we were struck by the quality of the toys for sale and their reasonable prices. The money raised from these sales is donated to local Women and Children’s charities which is close to our heart as well as our desire to promote recycling efforts.
We have continued to engage with guest speakers and this month we welcomed the Lord Mayor of Wollongong, Tania Brown. It was a learning curve to realise the number of issues that involve local council. Also stressed was the importance of community engagement and letter writing to inform council of local issues which need attention.
A special guest at our last meeting was a local real estate agent, Mattias Samuelsson, who addressed a current topic of conversation for many people – the issue of whether to downsize. His excellent preparation anticipated so many of our questions with practical insights and explanations.
A lovely lunch while providing community support was organised at the Embark Restaurant at Loftus TAFE. Here, hospitality students prepared a diverse menu which they served in a restaurant setting. The three courses were delicious, and we were able to engage with the students and congratulate them on their individual contributions to the meal.
We can be found at the CWA hall, 15 The Drive Stanwell Park on the first Tuesday of the month 10am.
