Volunteers put up pergola for gran who lost her home in fire
Helensburgh Men's Shed teamed up with Salvos and the Helping Hands/Gardening Team to help a local grandmother
Since 2016, our Men’s Shed motto has been “Serving the 2508 Community”. We do this because we love helping others, sharing our life and trade skills, and making the most of the workshops at the ‘Shed in the Forest’. We support local schools, service clubs, churches, non-profits, the unemployed, pensioners, single mums, and everyone in our community, including people like Denise and her grandchildren.
Five years ago, Denise lost her home in a fire. Since then, Salvos has supported her through health challenges, caring for her grandchildren, and finding secure housing in Helensburgh.
Recently, the Shed teamed up with Salvos and the Helping Hands/Gardening Team to help Denise by building a covered pergola in her backyard. Now she can relax and enjoy her garden.
Your HMS is unique. Nestled amongst the gum trees at the end of Darkes Forest Road, our shipping container workshops are miracles of clever planning and organisation, each one a microcosm of production. Our main work area is a hayshed, airy and with a lovely outlook.
We enjoy our meal breaks in a cosy meeting room, a sun-drenched paddock, or even around a campfire, and we’re a green shed, utilising water tanks, solar power, and a high usage of the R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Repurpose, Reimagine, and more.
A big thank you to SJ Read and Parkes Street Landscape Supplies for kindly donating materials used in Denise’s Backyard project.
