Correction

A previous opinion piece published by The Illawarra Flame stated that Metropolitan Mine's modification application does not need to consider the Neutral or Beneficial Effect (NorBE) test. This was incorrect. "Metropolitan Mine's modification and its planned State Significant Development (SSD), are both assessed against the NorBE test," a Peabody spokesperson said. "All Metropolitan Mine approvals undergo rigorous, independent assessment by the NSW Government and the public has the opportunity to make submissions as part of this process." The NorBE test applies to 'historically mined areas', according to Metropolitan's Modification 4 Submissions Report (Attachment 5, Supplementary Surface Water Assessment Information, page 19).
