Frog of the Month: Striped Marsh Frog

August's frog of the month is the Striped Marsh Frog (Limnodynastes peronii).

This large frog species is native to the east coast of Australia and is recognisable by its brown colouration and dark stripes that run down the back of its body.

The Striped Marsh Frog can be found in a range of habitats that reside close to water, including flooded grasslands or the banks of ponds and streams. Interestingly, in suburbia, the males have a preference for residing in rainwater drains and pipe systems, as it enables their charismatic “donk” call to reverberate loudly to potential passing females.

I photographed this individual not so far from a drainage line running adjacent to a fire trail in Darkes Forest.
