Friday's results
Emil Herzog of Germany held off a late challenge from Portugal’s António Morgado to win the men’s junior road race, the first UCI Road World Championship event held yesterday after Thursday’s rest day.
Belgium’s Vlad van Mechelen placed third, France’s Paul Magnier was fourth and Artem Shmidt of the United States was fifth.
The 135.6km race, staged over eight laps, started and finished at Marine Drive in Wollongong.
In the men’s U23 road race, Kazakhstan’s Yevgeniy Fedorov outlasted his chasers to take victory in the afternoon event. Mathias Vacek, of the Czech Republic, finished second and Norway’s Soren Waerenskjold was third.
The event comprised 10 laps, totalling a race distance of 169.8km, with the start and finish at Marine Drive.
Celebration at Diggies
In social news, four-time Olympian and Tour de France winner Cadel Evans and other cycling stars attended the Oakley World Champions Evening held at Diggies, North Beach, Wollongong on Thursday night. See Side Optical’s Sonya Broadhead attended the event and said it was “a very professionally casual, and intimate event” at which Evans was the special guest.

“The staff at Diggies were so amazing, attentive and personal," Sonya said.
Other guests of note included retired professional road racer Stuart O’Grady, as well as international BMX stars Kai and Saya Sakakibara of Helensburgh. Sonya said that seeing so many champions in one place was “a very special experience”.

The weekend's races
As for upcoming events, the women’s junior road race and women’s elite road race are scheduled for tomorrow (September 24).
The Men Elite Road Race will be held on the last day of competition, September 25.
