TVC welcomes new team
Thirroul Village Committee elected a new executive at its AGM in August 2026 and presented the group's first Murray Jones Award
At the Thirroul Village Committee (TVC) Annual General Meeting on 30 August, a new executive team was elected comprising Elliot Stein (president), Renee Malyon (vice president), Megan Taylor (treasurer), Annette Jones (secretary), Cheryl Akhurst (assistant secretary) and Stephen Le Bas (public relations officer). They will be supported by the sub-committees and general members in Bruce Storey and Nick McLaren.
The new executive team is excited to get to work on behalf of all of Thirroul.
A big thank you was extended to our outgoing executive members Ray Smith (president), John Memberson (treasurer) and Tony Horneman (assistant secretary) for their long and dedicated service to the TVC.

New Murray Jones Award presented
The TVC was proud to award the inaugural 'Murray Jones Award' for community service to Thirroul, named in honour of the late Murray Jones, long-time secretary of the TVC. There could be no greater recipient for the award than Ross Dearden for his work to secure the Ray Hannah Lands for all of us. It was so lovely that Murray's wife Deb and his son Dan were able to present the award.
The member for Heathcote, Maryanne Stuart MP attended the meeting and provided an update on a number of issues, including the following:
- Proposed pedestrian crossing options for north Thirroul
Maryanne gathered as many interested parties as possible in the room with Transport for NSW (TfNSW) to discuss the best option for pedestrians to cross Lawrence Hargrave Drive (LHD). At the moment TfNSW are looking at installing a refuge crossing near the Esplanade and Mary Street Thirroul. Funding needs to be approved and allocated before any work can commence.
- New 'Keep Clear' signage on Lawrence Hargrave Drive
Maryanne arranged for three new ‘Keep Clear’ spaces in Thirroul shopping centre. One is in front of the Fire Brigade, which the fireys are very happy with this as it has improved their access from the site.
- Markings near the shopping centre at the corner of LHD and Raymond Road
These markings are to do with the check before you dig requirements. TfNSW is investigating installing a raised platform at the lights near the intersection of LHD and Raymond Road. This is to slow down traffic at this point. This is only in the initial investigatory phase at present.
As a result of recent discussions, TfNSW is investigating installing a dedicated left hand turn lane, heading south, near Raymond Road as often drivers try to race off at the lights. TfNSW is also looking at activating the right-hand arrow at the lights on LHD to enable safe turning into Raymond Road.
- Update on Complying Development Certificates (CDC)
The NSW Government is rolling out a single set of rules for how communities have their say on planning proposals. Changes were proposed to address current inconsistencies across the State in how CDCs are notified as there is a difference in the notification requirements for the 33 local government areas in Greater Sydney compared to the rest of NSW.
These changes are expected to be finalised by the Government by the end of 2026 as part of the broader package of work on variations to Complying Development. To find out, click here.
- Draft Illawarra Shoalhaven Plan on exhibition
The NSW Department of Housing and Infrastructure has placed the draft Illawarra Shoalhaven Plan on exhibition. This draft Plan sets the strategic land use framework for the Illawarra Shoalhaven region for the next 20 years. Here is a link to this draft plan.
The next TVC meeting will be held on Sunday, 22 November 2026 commencing at 4pm at TRIPS Hall, Railway Parade, Thirroul.
