Transport for NSW media release: 26 June 2026

Construction of the Mount Ousley interchange continues to forge ahead with the project now more than 50 per cent complete and more than 561,000 people hours worked to date.

Transport for NSW Project Director Malcolm Hill said the interchange has visually come to life in recent months with a combined 36 concrete girders now in place for two of the four new bridges to be built.

“With two bridges well underway, work to prepare for construction of the Mount Ousley Road shared path bridge is set to start in the coming weeks,” Mr Hill said.

“The new shared path bridge will create a safe, accessible and seamless active transport link for people walking and cycling between the University of Wollongong and Wollongong TAFE NSW precincts and the northern suburbs.

“Since the consultation summary report and concept design for the Mount Ousley Road shared path bridge were published, Transport has refined the design, completed an Addendum Review of Environmental Factors, and finalised an Addendum Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment.

“Community and stakeholder feedback helped shape the final design, further minimising vegetation impacts and improving safety, capacity and user experience.

“As a result, key improvements include widening the staircase to separate two‑way movements, adding dual cyclist wheeling channels, and introducing mid and lower‑level landings with pedestrian fencing.”

The Mount Ousley Road shared path bridge features include:

  • a steel trough‑girder bridge providing 6.5-metre clearance for oversize and overmass vehicles
  • a four‑metre-wide accessible shared path with a boardwalk for walkers and cyclists
  • two viewing areas offering resting spots to enjoy views towards Mount Keira (Djeera)
  • stairs with a wheeling channel to help cyclists move bikes easily
  • a raised pedestrian crossing on Dumfries Avenue, about 120 metres west of McMahon Street
  • four speed cushions on Dumfries Avenue to calm traffic around the crossing
  • an accessible parking space off the Old Mount Ousley Road cul‑de‑sac with direct path access
  • landscaping and revegetation to blend the structure into its surroundings.

Construction of the shared path bridge will have some environmental impacts though many have been reduced through design refinement.

These impacts and mitigation measures are outlined in the project’s Addendum Review of Environmental Factors, available on the project website at transport.nsw.gov.au/mountousley.

Additional vegetation removal is scheduled to begin on Monday 29 June, weather permitting, and once complete, will allow for construction to start.

Construction of the shared path bridge is expected to start in July 2026, weather permitting.

The NSW Government announced an additional $12 million to fund the shared path bridge in August last year, adding it to the scope of the joint NSW-Australian Government Mount Ousley Interchange project.
